Abstract acrylic painting with Mirko Junkovic (Cambridge)

This is an opportunity to enjoy discovering the infinite possibilities of acrylic paint without the concerns of an external subject matter. In fact, picture making or direct reference to a subject matter is put to one side for today; the potentialities of the paint are the subject matter. The day will encourage you to call upon and connect with your intuition and inner-self to begin to develop a personal mode of expression. You will be shown a range of methods and techniques that can be used to apply paint, capitalizing on chance and unpredictability. Having an open mind towards experimentation, exploration and discovery is key. The medium for this class is acrylic paint. It has been available since the early sixties providing a new alternative to the traditions of oil paint. Acrylic is versatile; it is water based, can be diluted, used straight from the tube, applied to a variety of surfaces, and dries very quickly. The day will consist of an introduction to some painters and examples of abstract expressionism. A brief introduction to Mirko’s work. A series of paint application demonstrations and short workshops building up a collection of techniques. Finally, working more independently you will have an opportunity to develop some of the morning’s workshop techniques towards some personal abstract responses. The day will wrap up with a relaxed review of the day’s outcomes.
